Since 19 September a new system for monitoring cargo residues and ships' operational waste has been put in place by Dunkerque-Port.

This service, which is integrated in the global ship tracking software (SIRENE in operation since June 2011), allows shipping agents to input the declaration of waste and residues on board before the ship arrives in port, and to place orders for collection with approved collectors for the issuing of a disposal certificate. The collectors, who are also connected to the ship monitoring software, can thus optimise their collection operations.

This application also enables the port authorities to centralise and monitor waste declarations submitted by the ships via their agents, to track collection operations and to forward any anomalies observed directly to the European ship monitoring system (SafeSeaNet).

Cargo residues and ships' operational waste are collected by truck or barge, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, and taken to a specialist treatment centre inside the port area.

Through these various local service providers and tools, the Port of Dunkirk provides ships with a complete, modern system for monitoring and treating operational waste and cargo residues.
