The Hapag-Lloyd shipping company has announced the start of a new regular line containerized service calling weekly in Dunkerque.

The German shipowner will launch the new shipping service in connection with Senegal (Dakar), Mauritania (Nouakchott), the trans-shipment hub in Tangier, Morocco, and Dunkerque.

The service will also allow customers to serve the Portuguese ports of Leixoes in the North-South direction and Lisbon in the South-North direction.

Called DEX, for Dakar Express, with a fleet of 4 ships with a nominal capacity of 1,700 TEUs, this new service will call at the Port of Dunkerque from Monday, November 26th onwards.

It complements the shipping offer from and to West Africa and the Iberian Peninsula, but it will also open to markets in Latin America, North America, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Far East and Australia.

For Stéphane Raison, President of the Executive Board: "The arrival of Hapag-Lloyd in Dunkerque with this new service reinforces both the deployment strategy for the temperature-controlled products sector by reinforcing the Port of Dunkerque's position as the #1 French port for imports of fruit and vegetables in containers, but also opens new prospects for importers and exporters in the Hauts-de-France region in the field of mass retailing, the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, automotive sector and agricultural and agri-food activities."

For Peter Mertens, Managing Director - Hapag-Lloyd France: "Hapag-Lloyd meets the expectations of the port communities of Dunkerque, Lille and also exporters / importers of the Hauts-de-France for the arrival of a new ship-owner in Dunkerque. We believe in this port, in its maritime, commercial and human potential. Our new weekly service will be competitive with a wide coverage, direct to Africa but also transhipment from our Tangier Med hub. We are counting on the full support of freight forwarders and industry in the region."
